Dentures Q&A

What are dentures?

Dentures are removable prosthetic devices that replace many or all of the teeth in your smile. They’re made up of artificial teeth (which are typically composed of porcelain or composite resin) attached to a gum-colored base.

The technology used for dentures has vastly improved over time. Today’s dentures are far more comfortable and natural-looking than they used to be and can make your smile beautiful and functional once again.

What are the different types of dentures?

There are different denture options to suit your particular needs, preferences, and budget, including:

Full or traditional dentures

Full dentures replace all of the teeth either your upper or lower jaw — or both. They attach over your gums with suction or adhesive and look natural once in place.

Partial dentures

If your smile is missing some but not all of its teeth, then partial dentures are for you. The base of partial dentures fit over your gums, but it also has custom-designed holes where you still have natural teeth. This enables your natural teeth to poke through and work side-by-side with your artificial teeth.

Immediate dentures

If you’re getting extractions to make way for full dentures, you typically have to wait for your gums to heal before you can begin wearing your dentures. Immediate dentures, however, give you the ability to begin wearing your dentures right after you have your extractions.

Your dentist makes your dentures from an impression of your smile before your extractions so that they’re ready to use immediately. Because your jaw naturally changes shape and shrinks as it heals from the extractions, immediate dentures require periodic refitting and relining, making them more expensive than regular dentures. But for patients who don’t want to be toothless for a time, immediate dentures are an excellent choice.

Implant-supported dentures

Implant-supported dentures connect to your smile with the help of dental implants, which are tiny titanium posts implanted into your jaw to function as artificial tooth roots. Using dental implants to support your dentures can make them immediately feel more comfortable and secure and also provides your jawbone with healthy stimulation.

Are dentures comfortable?

Once you get used to your dentures, you’ll notice that they have a profoundly positive effect on your oral comfort and capabilities. Dentures can take some getting used to, though. Many patients experience an awkward adjustment period while the muscles in their mouths are learning how to work with the dentures.

As your oral and facial muscles retrain, you might notice that your dentures feel loose or bulky. You also might experience an increased flow of saliva. These sensations are entirely normal and soon fade away.
